The Sydenham choir is recognized as one of the leading Orthodox male Jewish choirs in the world. Using the liturgy of the Jewish world, including Chassidic, modern Israeli and Sephardic melodies. A new Chazzan, Yudi Cohen, joined the Synagogue on 7th of April 2005 following the retirement of Oshy Tugendhaft from full-time chazzanut.

The services on which the music is based is of course that which is enjoyed by the many hundreds and thousands of worshippers who attend the weekly and Yom Tov services. It has its own unique flavour in that most of the tunes are sung with Sephardic pronunciation despite the fact that the ritual followed by the congregation is Ashkenazi. The choir also officiates at weddings. The conductor of the Sydenham choir is Jose Stern who is regarded as one of the foremost conductors of Jewish choral music in South Africa.
Yudi Cohen
Chazan Yudi Cohen is captivating the crowds who are flocking to the Sydenham Shul to listen to his beautiful davening. Blessed with an enchanting tenor voice, Yudi’s unique (and sometimes “unorthodox”) mix of Chazonus and popular Jewish melodies is creating nothing less than musical magic. He is equally at home with the classical compositions of Yossele Rosenblatt and the contemporary niggunim of Shlomo Carlebach. Teaming up with the world famous Sydenham Choir under renowned Conductor Jose Stern, has created a combination of talent hard to beat even by international standards.

Yudi was born in London, studied in the USA and Australia and comes from a family steeped in Chazonus. He himself is thoroughly familiar with the full spectrum of Jewish music. His father and both grandfathers were well-known baalei-tefillah abroad. He has been singing since an early age and was the star soloist in established Boys Choirs overseas.

He recently graduated with a BTech in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy from Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria where he was the winning recipient of the Pretorium Trust Award and Absa Merit Award for the Most Outstanding Opera Student 2008.

Since joining Sydenham Shul, Yudi has introduced many new melodies which are getting feet tapping and shoulders swaying.

If you haven’t been, you don’t know what you’re missing!
